A call for campaign links October 31, 2006
Posted by Jason in 2006 Elections.add a comment
You may have noticed that I have two special posts regarding the 2006 election on the sidebar. The 2006 Michigan Election Candidates post lists all the candidates that will be on the ballot in certain districts of Berrien and Newaygo Counties. I also link to their campaign websites. Unfortunately I’m still missing links to quite a few candidates. The candidate list below includes everyone for whom I don’t have a linked website. If you know their website please say so in the comments.
I also have a post that lists the proposals that will be appearing on the ballot this year. In that post I provide links to the main organizations that either support or oppose the proposal. I’m missing organizations for: Oppose proposal #1 and support/oppose Proposal #4. Please comment if you know of any groups that have been organized specifically in response to these proposals.

Religion, atheism, and college professors October 29, 2006
Posted by Jason in Atheism, Religion.add a comment
Razib linked to an exploratory study (.pdf) on religion and atheism among college professors earlier today. Here are some of the statistics from the paper that I found interesting (Razib has more):
- 10% of respondents chose the statement “I don’t believe in God.”
- 13.4% chose the statement “I don’t know whether there is a God, and I don’t believe there is any way to find out.”
- Belief in God is negatively correlated as you move up the elite college chain (community colleges->BA granting institutions->non-elite doctoral granting institutions->elite doctoral granting institutions)
- “Psychology and biology have the largest proportion of atheists and agnostics, at about 61 percent.” Mechanical engineering is #2 at 50 percent.
- 6.1% of respondents said that the Bible is the “actual word of God.” The negative correlation mentioned earlier also holds here.
- 75.1% of respondents said that religion does not belong in public schools (negative correlation again).
- 84.1% of respondents disagreed with the statement “The theory of intelligent design IS a serious scientific alternative to the Darwinian theory of evolution.” The negative correlation made yet another appearance here.
- 90.1% of Republican professors say they believe in God while only 42.6% of non-Republicans are believers.
Interesting study.

Hoekstra: Iraqis need Jesus! October 26, 2006
Posted by Jason in 2006 Elections, Politics.add a comment
The Oceana’s Herald-Journal has a summary of a debate in its October 26th edition between Republican incumbent Peter Hoekstra and Democratic challenger Kimon Kotos. I was reading through it and this paragraph jumped out at me:
While discussing a book he had recently read, “Light Force.” by Brother Andrew and Al Jansen, Hoekstra said its message is that there is a need to keep Christianity in the Middle East, and that the road to peace there may be through the word of God and Jesus.
Just what Iraq needs, more religion! Granted, I’m not sure if he actually endorsed the book’s message or not.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find a transcript of the debate. If anyone knows where to find one I’d be interested in seeing what exactly was said during this part of the debate.

Last week of The Haunting October 23, 2006
Posted by Jason in Life.9 comments
If you haven’t been to The Haunting of Fremont this week is your last chance. The Haunting will be open this week on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from around 7:00pm to 11:00pm. See my previous post for more details and location.
Last week I worked in the mine scaring people with a spider and screaming at them through a wall on Saturday. My throat is still a little sore from that! Just remember that if you do visit, once you get past the cemetery and enter the first building, turn right not left into the wall! Don’t worry, that “Keep Out” sign doesn’t really mean you should keep out.
WZZM-13 releases voter’s guide October 19, 2006

WZZM has released a voter’s guide for Michigan. You can construct a ballot for your area and then compare the candidates responses to various questions side-by-side.
Jason Felton is a homo sapien in his mid-20s observed to be living in west Michigan. Observations suggest that he spends way too much time on the internet reading blogs, researching family trees, and keeping track of current events in science and politics. Other interests of his include atheism, electronics, religion, and history, among many other things.
