Here’s a list of the 2006 election maps that I’ve completed (all in Michigan):

  • Governor
  • US Senate (in-progress)
  • US House of Representatives, 1st – 15th districts (that’s all of them)
  • State Senate, 21st and 34th districts
  • State House, 78th and 100th districts

I’ll be putting some of these up on the blog over time. If you’re interested in a particular district’s race that I haven’t done or posted, let me know and I’ll create the map and put it up. I take requests. :-)

There’s a new (to me at least) trailer out for Order of the Phoenix.  You can download it here.  Looks good!

New theme April 24, 2007

What do you think of the new theme?  I think I like it better than the old one.  The only thing that really annoys me about it is that the column width is smaller than before.  I had to adjust the image size on the Michigan gubernatorial map to make it fit into the column.

I’d like to change the header image too.  It’s set at the default image for now.  I’ll have to dig around my picture archives and see if I can find something suitable.

A Song of Ice and Fire coming to HBO April 24, 2007

This is old news but I just learned that George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire (ASoIaF) fantasy series has been picked up by HBO! ASoIaF is an awesome series of books. Currently there are four books (out of seven) out with the fifth due sometime this year. See the previously linked Wikipedia article for more details on the series.

I’m glad it’s being turned into a TV series and not a movie. The books are just too large and complex to fit into a 3-hour movie. HBO will also have a lot more leeway on the content which gets pretty explicit in the books. Now if only HBO weren’t so damn expensive…

Computer, meet sledgehammer April 23, 2007

I have to admit that this post would probably be a lot more interesting if it actually was about destroying a computer with a sledgehammer!

A few days ago I decided to switch back to my old 600 MHz Pentium III computer. The computer I’d been using, a 900 MHz AMD Athlon, was just too unstable. Random crashes, lockups, and on top of that the processor fan was noisy as hell. So I made the decision to reinstall Windows XP and switch back to the older computer.

Now, I’m pretty used to doing this stuff. I’ve probably installed various flavors of Windows a few dozen times and I’ve done a lot of hardware installations. So I can handle this right?

My first expletives came out when I found out that the power supply from the AMD case wouldn’t fit into the Pentium case (AMD case and Pentium case being high-level technical terms of course). That meant that instead of just moving the hard drives and power supply I had to root EVERYTHING, motherboards and all, out of both cases and swap them. Damn it.

My next goal was to fit the front USB panel from the Pentium case into the AMD case. My Pentium III computer had originally come in a proprietary Compaq case which the front USB panel fit perfectly. Ever since I moved it into the Pentium case it’s been hanging out the front. In one of the few instances of things going right, I drilled a hole into the USB ports’ little case, put a bolt in it, and attached it to one side of the 5.25″ drive bays inside the case. It looks kind of funny but hey, it works. And that’s what counts right?computer.jpg

The next annoyance occurred when I went to plug in all the wires for the front panel switches and LEDs. Did I think to note the pinout before I took the motherboard out of the Pentium case? Of course not! Did I have a manual for the proprietary PoS Compaq motherboard? Of course not! So I got to spend a little while plugging jumpers into the 20 (?) pin header for the front panel trying to find out which pins were which. Eventually I was able to find the pins for the power switch and hard drive activity LED. I’ve tried to find the pins for the speaker but haven’t had any luck and I’m pretty sure I’ve tried every possible configuration. I’m pretty satisfied with the setup now so I’ll probably just leave it how it is now.

After all that, I was finally ready to install Windows. Since this is an older computer and I wasn’t sure I could boot from the CD, I brought out my Windows startup disk with plans to wipe the partitions from the hard drive with fdisk, format the disk, and install Windows XP. Alas, it was not to be. Fdisk returned a “divide by zero” error. What the hell? That’s never happened before. I assumed it was a problem with the fdisk file. I mean, I couldn’t possibly have put the hardware back in wrong….right? After that I spent about four hours downloading (we have very slow dialup internet) various versions of startup disks from my grandma’s computer. None of them worked of course. Finally I had the idea to swap the primary (from the hard drive) and secondary (from the CD-ROM) IDE cables and things finally worked right. I didn’t even have to use fdisk since the computer booted straight from the CD. Argh.

It was smooth sailing from there. Well, as long as you don’t count the 64 Windows update files I installed (I downloaded them a long time ago so I wouldn’t have to download them every time), the dozen or so programs I installed, the evening spent downloading the Windows updates I didn’t have, and the 20 MB update file for my antivirus program (which downloaded at a steady 1.6 kbps). It was finished!

Umm…yay?

2006 Michigan gubernatorial election map April 13, 2007

Governor's Race Results MapIt is finished! To your right is a map of the results of the 2006 Michigan gubernatorial race. I calculated the color for each city or township by multiplying 255 by the percentage of the vote that each candidate received (summing up any third party candidates). That gave me the RGB values. A deeper red means a greater percentage of people voted for the Republican candidate (Dick DeVos in this case) and a deeper blue indicates more votes for the Democratic candidate (Jennifer Granholm). If the third party candidates had gotten enough votes you’d see more green in the map. I think the township that had the highest percentage of third party votes was Troy Township in Newaygo County (9.8%).

I used the data from the Michigan Department of State to create the map. You can visit their website here.

Here are some files that I’ve made in the course of this project:

  • Excel spreadsheet (617 Kb) containing various data on the gubernatorial race.
  • Larger image (1600×1300) of the election map.
  • MEGA-SIZE (7000×7000) image of the election map. *BEWARE* This image takes some time to load and is a strain even for the computer I used to make it.
  • Blank image of Michigan including cities and township. *Warning* MEGA-SIZE

I’m currently working on maps for the 2nd and 6th congressional districts of the U.S. House of Representatives. I’m sure there’s an easier way to do all this stuff so if you have any suggestions please say so in the comments.
