I’m back! May 19, 2007

We got back today from Missouri a day early. Normally we drive a few hundred miles and stay at a hotel, splitting the trip in half. This time we decided to just drive all the way in one day.
We visited with my great grandma for a while (she’s doing well) and also went to a couple cemeteries. I took some pictures of some of my ancestors’ graves. Unfortunately, while driving back stupidity struck. I accidentally erased everything on my camera! I tried several image recovery programs to try and get them back but my camera, a Fuji, appears to be one that erases data by actually overwriting it, instead of just marking it as available space. *sigh*
Oh well, there’s always next year.
Heading to Missouri May 16, 2007

My grandparents and I are heading to Missouri tomorrow to visit my great grandmother. We’ll be back on Sunday so I’ll be incommunicado until then.
While I’m there I’m going to take some time to do a little rare out-of-state family history research. We’re planning on visiting a couple cemeteries where some of my GG and GGG grandparents are buried. I’m also planning on visiting the county library to see what resources they have there.
Have a good weekend!

We’ve now had two tornado warnings in my county in the past two weeks. I wasn’t here for the first one but I was for today’s warning. Last week a tornado actually touched down somewhere in the county; fortunately none touched down today that I’m aware of (I didn’t catch the late news). The worst part of the storm was south of us so we got away with just a few minutes of strong winds and rain.
I snapped the picture on the right during the storm. I don’t know exactly what what was going on with those low clouds (they weren’t rotating) but they were massive and looked pretty menacing as they moved over the house. There was also a strange “banding” in the clouds just before this structure passed over us. Creepy!

Reading books May 16, 2007

How fast do you read a book? If you’ve been keeping on eye on the “Currently Reading” widget on the sidebar you may have noticed that I’ve been blowing through the Harry Potter books. I distinctly remember reading Sorcerer’s Stone when I switched to the new theme. I just finished the sixth book today which means that I was able to finish all six books in just over three weeks! That’s not bad, considering that I was also reading Lost Christianities (which I found to be an interesting read by the way) at the same time and it took nearly a month to read.
That’s about the usual time it takes for me to get through a book; largely because I tend to fervently read it for a few days and then put it down for a week or more at a time.
I think I’ll continue reading two books concurrently and see how it goes. It’s nice to be able to switch topics when you need a break. My next two selections will be Karen Armstrong’s A History of God (which has been in the sidebar nearly a week and still remains untouched) and William Warren Sweet’s The Story of Religions in America (free at a yard sale and written in 1930!).
Neat website on religions in the US May 15, 2007

I came across this website a couple days ago: The Association of Religion Data Archives. They have statistics on religious denominations in the United States (and other countries I think) all the way down to the county level. I, of course, particularly like the maps section.

Rose-breasted Grosbeak

Jason Felton is a homo sapien in his mid-20s observed to be living in west Michigan. Observations suggest that he spends way too much time on the internet reading blogs, researching family trees, and keeping track of current events in science and politics. Other interests of his include atheism, electronics, religion, and history, among many other things.
