Blossomtime Parade on maps.live December 28, 2007

I was perusing Benton Harbor and St. Joseph on maps.live when I noticed some funny traffic patterns. It turns out that they took the bird’s eye view pictures when the Blossomtime Parade (most likely) was running! To take a look go to maps.live.com and zoom in on the St. Joseph/Benton Harbor area and switch to bird’s eye view. The parade runs mostly along Business 94 in both cities.
I marched in this parade each year during high school in the band. That was somewhat fun but tiring.

Really old color photos always fascinate me. Check out this photo of a New York City street circa 1900. It was Wikipedia’s featured picture yesterday.
How to save your line breaks (I think) December 18, 2007

I’ve been fighting the WordPress WYSIWYG editor for a long time trying to save the breaks I put in between lines. Now I think I have a solution!
First, here are a few tags that don’t work: <br />, <p></p>, <p> </p>
If you put any of those tags into the HTML editor in WordPress it ends up not saving them in the final version. However, if you use the <p> tag with the align attribute, it appears to save your breaks! Use it like so: <p align=”left”> </p>
It may work with the other alignment options but I haven’t tested them out. Keep in mind that I found this in the context of trying to create a list (using just blank spaces, not the list tag) of board members that included their pictures. This solution appears to work in my case but may not apply in other situations. Also, the view in the WYSIWIG editor still looked funky after I put in the blankspace tags but showed up correctly formatted when I previewed or published it.

Foodblogging: Toasted Pumpkin Seeds Part II December 3, 2007

They’re finished! The final part of the process is quite easy. I let the seeds dry out overnight in the office (away from the cats!) on a sheet of wax paper. That worked very well; the seeds didn’t stick at all. I then melted a couple teaspoons of butter on the stove and mixed that in with the seeds in a bowl.
After that all you have to do is put the seeds onto a baking pan and slide it in the oven. I set mine for about 300 degrees and left them in for about 25 minutes. They could probably have stayed in longer but I was erring on the low side since this was my first time making them.
They taste pretty good; possibly a little too much salt. Taking the shells off is too much like work (
) so I’ve just been eating them whole.
bon appétit!
