Hours that is. A while back I became interested in distributed computing again and joined seti@home (again) and climateprediction.net. I liked the idea behind the two projects, but mostly, I thought the screen savers were cool. :)

climatepred.jpgAs I understand it, it’s not possible to split the climate prediction models into small chunks so each user gets one model run to perform. And that takes a long, long time as you can see from the screenshot. Just a few days ago, after about six months (I think), we finally passed the halfway mark on the climate model. That’s a lot of computing!

Considering how often the computer is on, I’d estimate that the rest of the model should be finished sometime in May. And in case you were wondering, the middle run is a smaller climate model and the bottom is a seti@home work unit.

Since I posted about it when Scott Killips entered the race for Michigan’s 2nd congressional district, I felt I should mention that he just recently dropped out of it.

Wow.

I was a little concerned that I’d eventually run up against the former 50 MB limit for uploads. The limit has just been expanded to 3 GB.

Very nice!

Here are some random thoughts from the past couple weeks:

  • Cat vomit takes about three paper towel sheets and a wet rag to clean up.
  • Counter-Strike is still fun to play.
  • My saxophone technique is noticeably improved from when I(re)started a month ago (I gave up on the violin).
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (movie) is better on the second viewing.
  • Ditto for the final book.
  • I’ve been continuously blogging since August 18, 2006.  My longest streak ever with a single website (although I initially started on Myspace)!
