Muggle punk! May 29, 2008

It appears that my Genealogy Quest #1 Travel Bug (TB) may have been taken by a muggle (the “technical” term for a non-geocacher). :( Here’s the relevant part of the last log at the cache it was in:

This one had been found by a muggle just before we got there, so close surveillence might be needed.

I checked the cache today and the TB was gone. Maybe if I’m lucky he’ll place it into another cache. I hope. Otherwise I’ll probably release the duplicate tag in a couple of weeks. Damn muggle punks!

No one guessed last week’s entry: Muskegon, MI. You know, you guys better start working on these because eventually all I’ll have left are cities shaped like squares and then this’ll be really difficult! :-) This week’s city should be fairly easy. Take a look:

Back in January I mentioned a distributed computing project called climateprediction.net that I was running. I predicted that the work unit, which is very large, would finish in May.

Time leftI was right! The latest image is on the left. As you can see, there are about 11 hours left. That should be finished today. I’m not sure if I’ll keep running it after today. I might switch over to another project. We’ll see!

Last week’s entry was guessed correctly by Peter: Niles, MI! This week’s city is also located in west Michigan but is farther north. Here it is!

Combining genealogy and geocaching May 16, 2008

Today I combined two of my favorite hobbies by dropping off two travel bugs in geocaches. My travel bugs have a specific mission: To travel through the areas that my ancestors have lived! I’m hoping that eventually they’ll make it down to Izard County, Arkansas and Lawrence County, South Dakota. Genealogy Quest #1, tracking my ancestors, is heading down to Arkansas. Genealogy Quest #2 is tracking Kari’s ancestors and heading to South Dakota. Hopefully they’ll reach their goals!

Eventually I plan on releasing more travel bugs with foreign coins attached and tasked to return to their home country. Coin collecting and geocaching! A perfect match. ;-)

Who ate my cupcake (wax paper included)?

Evil cat #1?!

Or evil cat #2?!

My money’s on Evil Cat #1 but I suppose we’ll never know for sure who murdered my cupcake!

Summary

All but one of the current Newaygo County Commissioners will be running for re-election. The Board is currently composed entirely of Republicans, all of whom will be facing challengers in their primary. In addition, three districts will be challenged in November by Democrats.

The Newaygo County Board of Commissioners is divided into seven districts. You can find more information on the Board (and a map) at their website.

Below the fold I’ll detail the upcoming races in each district and provide a little historical background (if I happen to know any!) on the candidates.

Today was the deadline for filing as a candidate on the August 5 ballot. If you happen to be from Fremont you can check who will be on the ballot on my page here. Otherwise you can find out who the candidates for your district will be at the Michigan Secretary of State’s candidate listing.

Ezra Klein:
