Summary

All but one of the current Newaygo County Commissioners will be running for re-election. The Board is currently composed entirely of Republicans, all of whom will be facing challengers in their primary. In addition, three districts will be challenged in November by Democrats.

The Newaygo County Board of Commissioners is divided into seven districts. You can find more information on the Board (and a map) at their website.

Below the fold I’ll detail the upcoming races in each district and provide a little historical background (if I happen to know any!) on the candidates.

This election will be held on May 6, 2008. As usual I make no guarantees of 100% accuracy. Check the Newaygo County Clerk’s website for more information on this election. An “inc.” after the name indicates that the candidate is an incumbent.

11 Feb 2008 Update: Added Neil James Featherstone to Fremont School Board candidates.

13 Feb 2008 Update: Added Ty Miller to Fremont School Board candidates.  The candidate filing deadline was yesterday so this list should be final.

Proposals

Operating Millage Renewal Proposal

This proposal will allow the school district to continue to levy the statutory rate of 18 mills on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, required for the school district to receive its revenue per pupil foundation allowance

Shall the limitation on teh amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, in Fremont Public Schools, Newaygo, Muskegon and Oceana Counties, Michigan, be increased by 18 mills ($18.00 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) for a period of 5 years, 2008 to 2012, inclusive, to provide funds for operating purposes; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and levied in 200 is approximately $2,640,000 (this is a renewal of millage which expired with the 2007 tax levy)?

Sen. Russ Feingold will not be running for president in 2008.  I liked him so I’m sad to see him drop out of the race.  Hopefully he’ll continue to stick it to the Bush Administration in the Senate.

Tom Vilsack, the Democratic governor of Iowa, has announced that he will be running for president in the 2008 election.  You can see his official campaign website here:  http://www.tomvilsack08.com/.  He even uses Facebook and MySpace, how cool is that? :-)

Still, it’s a little early don’t you think?
