Steve Irwin and Religion September 18, 2006

I’ve been getting a lot of Google hits lately on Steve Irwin and religion. Now I know why. Apparently there’s a rumor floating around the Internet that Irwin converted to Christianity a couple of weeks before his death. Snopes doubts its authenticity:

All of this information, however, is second-hand, so while at the moment all signs point to this tale about a last-minute conversion being false, we’ll leave the “Undetermined” status in place until such time as a member of the Irwin family or someone speaking on its behalf addresses the rumor, either to confirm or dismiss it.

Troy Gentry Charged in Hunting Scam September 10, 2006

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that Troy Gentry, part of the country music group Montgomery Gentry, allegedly falsely tagged and killed a tame bear in Minnesota.  According to the government he bought the bear, which had been raised in captivity, from a friend and then shot it using a bow and arrow in a canned “hunt”.  The “hunt” was taped and then edited to make it appear as if the bear had been shot in a fair-chase situation.

If the charges are true…

Nice going asshole.  Not only were you not brave enough to go out and do a real hunt (you did once, why not this time?), but you bought a tame bear, put it in a pen, and then killed it and lied about a fair-chase.  Yeah, you’re a real hunter.

Dumbass.

Anyone catch the William Shatner Roast on Comedy Central tonight?

Comedy Gold!

If you missed it and like Shatner and vulgar humor you’ll definitely want to watch it.  I didn’t know that Stewie’s Rocketman solo on Family Guy was based on a Shatner performance.  George Takei was brilliant.

Funny stuff!

Katie Couric v. The Internet September 10, 2006

I was just watching an interview with Katie Couric about her new position as an anchor on CBS News (local, not national).  During the interview she said that she’d rather not get her news from some website “made by a guy in his pajamas at home” or from a blogger “spewing vitriol”.

I think she needs to spend more time on the blogosphere before making generalizations.  Web developers and bloggers are not “guys in pajamas”.  Many bloggers are laymen (like me) writing about topics important to them or personal issues.  There are also many professional bloggers.  Here are a few bloggers from just one little corner of the Internet:  A developmental biologist, philosopher, epidemiologist, psychologist, computer scientist, and a surgeon.  There are over 40 more bloggers posting at that site.  Are these people all wearing pajamas and “spewing vitriol”?  I don’t think so.  Can you find bloggers that spew vitriol?  Of course.  They may very well outnumber the good bloggers.  But to stereotype them as Katie Couric did just reveals her own lack of knowledge and biases.

By the way, I was not wearing my pajamas when I wrote this post.

Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray earlier today while filming for a documentary.

I liked watching his show every now and then.  He was kind of zany but that’s half the reason I liked him!  He will be missed.  :-(

“Crikey!”

:-(
