There’s a reason I don’t normally click through to see the comments on news stories at WZZM-13′s website: They’re almost always full of the most hateful and vile people on the internet. A prime example. Disgusting.

Then go read Ed Brayton’s and P.Z. Myers’ posts on Conservapedia, the conservative version of Wikipedia. Hilarious!
Fights and injuries reported among PS3 campers November 16, 2006

Jeremy reports (on a private blog, so no link) that fights have erupted among some gamers camped out to buy the new Playstation 3:
A man was injured at the West Bend, WI Wal-Mart this morning when it was announced to the crowd of 60-some campers that the store would only be recieving 10 units.
In a baffling display of managerial buffoonery, the store’s manager set up 10 chairs outside the store, and instructed the crowd to have at it. The result, beyond much pushing, shoving, and fighting, and one man being sent to the hospital as a result of being shoved face first into a telephone pole.
Intense. More details here. Considering how much PS3s are going for on Ebay (over $2,000 according to the TV news here) that’s a high stakes game of musical chairs the manager had running.
Jeremy also notes an incident in Kentucky involving a BB gun drive-by. From GameSpot news:
Two of those hit reportedly packed up and left the line, saying “a PlayStation 3 simply isn’t worth it.” The third customer remained in line, telling WKYT “I’d do it again, even if I get shot again.”
I think I’d leave too. I also note, with some amusement, that the Wikipedia pages for the Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii (but not the X-Box 360) had to be locked due to vandalism. Maybe they’ve taken the fight to the streets?
Ed Brayton Fisks Article on HR 2679 October 5, 2006

Ed Brayton has a great post up in which he fisks an article by Roy Moore on HR 2679, the misnamed Public Expression of Religion Act. I like the name Ed refers to the bill by:
Good ol’
JudgeRoy Moore, the Christian supremacist former Alabama supreme court justice, thinks HR 2679 (which I refer to as the Tonya Harding bill – if you can’t beat the ACLU in court, hobble them on the way up the steps) is a dandy idea.

Troy Gentry Charged in Hunting Scam September 10, 2006

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that Troy Gentry, part of the country music group Montgomery Gentry, allegedly falsely tagged and killed a tame bear in Minnesota. According to the government he bought the bear, which had been raised in captivity, from a friend and then shot it using a bow and arrow in a canned “hunt”. The “hunt” was taped and then edited to make it appear as if the bear had been shot in a fair-chase situation.
If the charges are true…
Nice going asshole. Not only were you not brave enough to go out and do a real hunt (you did once, why not this time?), but you bought a tame bear, put it in a pen, and then killed it and lied about a fair-chase. Yeah, you’re a real hunter.
Dumbass.
Katherine Harris Wins Florida Primary September 10, 2006

Florida Republicans have spoken. Somehow Harris’s resignation-laden campaign managed to win. I already gave my opinion of Harris in an earlier post. I’d link it but I can’t figure out how to link to individual posts so you’ll just have to look in the archives if you’re interested.
Walmart Caught “The Gay”! September 10, 2006

I’ve been reading Ed Brayton’s blog for a while now and I’d easily place it among my top 10. Go read his excellent (and funny!) response to a couple of WorldNetDaily’s articles about Walmart joining the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.
Warren Jeffs Arrested in Nevada September 10, 2006

The FBI probably breathed a sigh of relief today when Warren Jeffs, leader of a fundamentalist Mormon sect, was arrested during a traffic stop.
Warren Jeffs, the fugitive leader of a fanatical polygamous sect and one of the FBI’s most wanted men, had told his 10,000 followers he would never be taken alive. His words raised fears that he might try to conclude his fearsome reign in a blaze of glory. But the end, when it came, was far more mundane. After three years on the run, his red Cadillac was pulled over just north of Las Vegas late on Monday night by a traffic police officer who noticed his licence plate was not fully visible.
It’s a good thing they caught him during a traffic stop and not in a firefight. Some of the “godly” acts that he allegedly performed during his reign of terror include:
Mr Jeffs is wanted in Utah on charges of being an accomplice to rape for forcing an underage girl to marry an older man. He has been indicted for a similar offence in Arizona. (…)
In that time, hundreds of teenage girls were allegedly shared out among Mr Jeffs and his male lieutenants. The 50-year-old leader is reported to have fathered more than 50 children by 40 wives.
Young boys, seen as potential sexual rivals to the elders, were driven outside the church’s main settlement on the Utah-Arizona border and abandoned. Twenty church members who rebelled against Mr Jeffs’ leadership were thrown out of the sect in 2004, and their wives and children were redistributed among the other men.
Sounds like a stand-up guy. Ugh.
Mr. Jeffs is the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. The article describes some of the church’s practices:
Every FLDS member had to abide by an elaborate set of rules. No television, newspapers or outside influences were allowed. Long underwear had to be worn even in the ferocious heat of summer, and female members had to wear old-fashioned long gingham dresses. Children were taught to believe that Mr Jeffs was divinely ordained and infallible.
I remember seeing a report by Dateline or 20/20 on Colorado City, AZ which is owned almost completely by a fundamentalist Mormon sect. I’m not really sure if it was the FLDS church or not though. The church pretty much owned the entire town, including the police department. An authoritarian’s paradise. The people there lived exactly as the Guardian describes it. You can read more about the FLDS at Wikipedia.
Alabama Democratic Party Gives Darby the Boot September 10, 2006

Kudos to the Alabama Democratic Party for throwing out Larry Darby from any of their future primaries.
Democratic Party leaders want a former candidate for attorney general who denies the Holocaust occurred to stay out of their future primaries.
The party’s executive committee passed a resolution Saturday informing Larry Darby that “he is not welcome in the Alabama Democratic Party.”
Larry Darby lost his bid for attorney general back in June. Darby, who was an atheist until some time after the election, expressed surprise that atheist groups didn’t support him during his campaign:
Darby, a Montgomery lawyer who received more votes in Huntsville than Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson, released a long written statement Friday saying that others in the atheist community had turned their backs on him.
“Contrary to expectation, many atheist member organizations or many groups that allegedly represent free thinkers were quick to jump on the Judeo-Marxist bandwagon and dis(a)ssociate themselves from me,” Darby wrote.
Well gee Larry, I suppose it couldn’t have had anything to do with your racist views and Holocaust denial could it? Or your xenophobic desire for martial law to stop illegal immigration? Maybe that isn’t what atheists stand for? And “Judeo-Marxist”? What the hell is that supposed to mean??
Darby turned to the teachings of Jesus after his election loss:
Larry Darby, a former candidate for attorney general who lost in the Democratic primary but won most of North Alabama, said he is embracing Jesus as he crusades against “Judeo-Marxism.”
(…)
Darby said he changed his views on atheism “based on experiences or understanding of the world around me.” He didn’t respond directly when asked if he was renouncing atheism to position himself better politically.
“I agree with moral precepts put forth by Jesus of Nazareth and I am Christian in a sense that Jesus of Nazareth would approve,” Darby wrote.
Good riddance. We don’t need Darby’s radical views contaminating the already poor perceptions of atheists by the public. Maybe with his new religious outlook on life Darby will finally fit in with his pals on Stormfront. Have fun Larry, we won’t miss you.
Unfortunately it looks like he’ll be making a run for Congress in 2008. I predict another loss.
Jason Felton is a homo sapien in his mid-20s observed to be living in west Michigan. Observations suggest that he spends way too much time on the internet reading blogs, researching family trees, and keeping track of current events in science and politics. Other interests of his include atheism, electronics, religion, and history, among many other things.
